Engine development is constantly taking place in the automotive world as different automakers work to try and find more power, more efficiency and a greater level of performance for you from under the hood. Whether it’s the next version of the small engine that can be put into a hot hatch, or it’s the massive power you want from a V8, we certainly appreciate what different automakers have to offer. Cadillac has developed a variety of engines recently and they continue to offer us more of the power and performance we want to experience.
In recent years, there have been a variety of different models offered by Cadillac with several powertrains for the drive. Whether it was the ATS-V or the CTS-V, Cadillac showed us it had the ability to head to the track with power that came from engines that were sourced from their sibling brand, Chevrolet. The newest engine that will be offered will give us more power and engagement at the top sedan model offered by Cadillac today so that we can have more of what we want in the CT6 that we choose to drive on the road.
Developing the Technology
Not long ago, Cadillac announced it was working on a ‘hot vee’ design for the turbocharging that’s part of the engine under the hood of its sedans. Now we know they will put a 4.2-liter twin-turbocharged V8 under the hood of the new CT6 V-Sport trim which will make use of this design. The ‘hot vee’ design puts the turbochargers at the top of the engine between the cylinder heads to create a shorter distance between the turbos and the engine which reduces the turbo lag and allows the engine to have a compact design that’s enjoyed for the drive.
The compression ration offered of this new engine allows the engine to have an increase of 20 psi of boost for the drive. The expected power from this layout will be 550 horsepower and 627 lb.-ft. of torque with up to 90 percent of this torque coming at the 2,000 rpm level. We expect there to be an active fuel management system offered for this engine to offer cylinder deactivation to make the ride more efficient when you drive on the roads, but we don’t have the details regarding the fuel numbers of this newly powered version of the Cadillac CT6.
The new 4.2-liter V8 will be seen at the New York International Auto Show later this month to give us a clear view of what to expect from this car when it makes its way to the market for the 2019 model year. If you’ve been hoping for a new Cadillac with active power and the ability to have the ride on the track that can be a lot of fun or the ability to race down an open road, this is the car that will offer you those qualities when it’s time to have the drive you want.
