It’s been survival of the fastest online for quite a while and even more so now that Google Chrome is planning to ‘speed shame’ slow loading websites by posting a warning.
Internet Users are Impatient!
Let’s face it, we’re all in a rush these days and want things right now. And we’re especially restless online. Statistics show that 73 percent of mobile Internet users claim they’ve come across a website that was too slow to load. 47 percent of customers expect a web page to load in 2 seconds or less. And there’s no mercy for slowpokes -40 percent abandon a website that takes more than 3 seconds to load! We’ve all been there, staring at the screen, waiting for a website to upload, watching…waiting for something to happen. Wondering when to just give up and move on. It can be frustrating, right?
Google Chrome –Speed Police!
And so enter the speed police –Google Chrome developers claim that future versions of Chrome may identify sites that load fast or too slow. “We think the web can do better and want to help users understand when a site may load slowly, while rewarding sites delivering fast experiences,” the company is quoted as saying.
Warning –Website is a Slow Loader!
They’ll do this by placing badges on websites to warn users if a website is a slow loader. This gives users the choice either to stick it out and wait or take their search elsewhere. The badge could say something like “usually loads slow” according to load-time data connected to that site. And later Google may expand the system to display badges when a page is slow due to a user’s device or network conditions.
Rewards for Fast Loading Sites
As well as warning users about slow loaders, Google’s intentions are also to encourage website builders to be more mindful of their site’s performance, or else receive a ‘badge of shame’ for being too slow! On the flip side, Chrome also wants to reward fast loading websites. The plans were unveiled at the company’s Chrome Dev Summit in San Francisco in November 2019, but Google hasn’t set a date yet to launch the new badge system, and everything seems to be in the experimental stages. But in the meantime, it may be a good idea to check your website’s performance and explore ways to speed up the load time of your site.
