Recently, Toyota posted its final April sales numbers for this year, and these numbers, like so many, tell you a story of the success of the company.
Numbers and statistics tell us the story of success and failure in life. Many times we think of those of us with the most money being the most successful, but those who have the most money also have the greatest obligation and responsibility. In sports, numbers can often read to others as failures but are actually successes in some sports. When a hitter is able to safely hit the ball 30 percent of the time, they’re considered successful in baseball, but that actually translates to a 70 percent failure rate when they came to the plate and left without a hit.
Numbers and statistics can always be used to answer arguments and make points that feel like they are hard to argue against, but when you truly look at what they tell you, it’s easy to see that every number has two sides to the story and the ones from Toyota do an excellent job of allowing you to see what this brand is facing and where they need to focus for the upcoming months.
April Sales Numbers from Toyota
The overall sales for Toyota Motor North America came in at 192,348 vehicles in the market. this result is a 4.7percent decrease in volume compared to the volume from April 2017. This number also comes during a month that had two fewer selling days during this year compared to last year. What this means is the overall sales were up when you look at the daily sales rate. This increase per day was actually a 3.2 percent improvement in this market. Can you see how numbers can tell two different stories while being one simple number?
Overall, the Toyota division sold 170,706 models which were a drop of 5.1 percent overall and an increase of 2.8 percent for the daily rate while the Lexus division posted sales in April of 21,642 vehicles showing a decrease of 2.1 percent and an increase of 6.0 percent for the daily rate.
How do you approach the fact that your daily rate is up for the month compared to last year but the overall volume is down? Considering Toyota already has a plan in place to have a decrease in sales for the entire year, they’ve likely already prepared for lower overall sales and are encouraged to see this impressive increase in the daily number.
