A new Supercar Coming from BMW

It appears the BMW team is looking at building a new supercar that could use some of what they already have for the current i8 hybrid.

The new supercar may use the same carbon fiber monocoque that has the lightweight and the savings you want when you’re looking for a great vehicle to drive. Rumor has it, this new supercar might be able to produce as much as 700 horsepower or more to give us a car that’s a lot of fun on the track and admired on the road.

Will This New Car Use the i8 Powertrain

The current version of the BMW i8 uses a small engine and several electric motors. The engine is so small that it only has three cylinders to give you the power to get things going, but a new supercar will likely make use of a different engine. The BMW team has several engines they could choose from and won’t need to use the tiny power plant of the i8 to give us a new car that’s the top of the hybrid sports car range from this brand.

Improvements to the Electric Motors

Recently BMW board member, Klaus Frohlich informed us that that electric motors being used in the current i8 have become more powerful than in the past. The tea expects these motors to be good for 197 horsepower and 378 lb.-ft. of torque each to give an additional level of power to any car, they are used for. This means there could be nearly 800 horsepower before the gasoline engine is even considered. That’s a lot of power coming from the electric motors that are offered in a potential BMW supercar for the drive.

A Possible Combination from BMW

If BMW made use of the 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine that’s found in the X3 M40i in the new supercar that would give the car a base of 355 horsepower and 343 lb.-ft. of torque. Adding a pair of the electric motors mentioned would give the car a maximum output of 755 horsepower and 1,104 lb.-ft. of torque. This can be considered a conservative approach because it’s more likely that BMW will use at least three electric motors when they create the new supercar that will be part of the hybrid lineup from the BMW brand.

It’s Still Early

While we have an idea of the plan for the new BMW supercar that could be added to the lineup, it’s still extremely early in the planning process. Right now, we don’t have anything concrete and certainly don’t have an actual prototype for this new car. This unnamed supercar could debut as soon as 2023, but it’s not likely that it will arrive before that model year at all. This is going to be a fun car to think about and discuss from now until this vehicle shows up in its complete form to give us a great drive.
