On the heels of GM’s Investor Day announcements on November 17th, a new wave of questions has been raised by a vehicle concept released during Tech Day in China.
Does the new FRN-XE reflect Chevrolet’s future electric vehicle plans worldwide or only in Asia? Will the FRN-XE even reach other automotive markets outside of China? Will we see future electric versions of SUVs and sedans like the Chevrolet Tahoe or just the most successful vehicles like the Corvette?
We have the answers to some of these questions now, but we just have to see what the future has in store for others.
Chevrolet’s Newest Electric Vehicles
GM, the parent company behind Chevrolet, has been pushing out new electric vehicle concepts for the past few months. They range from the Chevy Equinox EV to a teaser for an electric Corvette announced during their Investor Day earlier this month.
The thing that the American market has been missing from Chevy’s current lineup, electric or otherwise? Sedans.
Compared to SUVs like the Chevrolet Tahoe and sports cars like the Corvette, sedans don’t perform well in the United States automotive industry. But that doesn’t mean that sedans aren’t popular in other markets of the world.
During the November 2022 Investor Day, GM’s President Mark Reuss announced that a new large sedan-like vehicle would be coming to China soon. While no other information was given during that showcase, a new concept vehicle matching Reuss’ description was introduced at Tech Day China a week later.
It’s called the FNR-XE, and from the initial pictures and description, it’s a real “car of the future.”
Everything We Know About the Chevrolet FNR-XE Right Now
Pictures of the Chevrolet FNR-XE show a sleek, round body with sharp lines and two primary colors – black and blue. The doors are concave, and the fenders stand out from the rest of the near-seamless design.
According to people who saw the vehicle up close, the trunk is designed to be accessed from inside and out easily. There’s not much information at this time about the interior design, features, and engine specs – other than that it’s supposed to be powered by an electric motor.
GM said this design reflected the company’s future styling for electric vehicles but otherwise didn’t have much to say about Chevrolet’s future after this electric sedan concept was released.
When and Where the FNR-XE Can be Found, and the Future for the American Market
Currently, the FNR-XE is only planned to be produced for and sold to the Chinese automotive market. Reports from China’s local media said that a production model will likely be launched next year based on GM’s plans to introduce 15 electric vehicles in the country by 2025.
The United States may only ever see this as an interesting foreign car, given the lack of interest in sedans. But there’s still time for the FNR-XE to make its way here – or for GM to release new electric versions of popular sedans and SUVs like the Chevrolet Tahoe and Malibu!
