While we don’t see a large pickup truck from Volkswagen in the North American market, this brand is no stranger to building trucks.
Recently, Ford and Volkswagen began a partnership that’s currently geared toward building smaller commercial vehicles together for the future. Even though this partnership has a focus on the commercial sector, the return of the Ford Ranger allows the two brands to begin to talk about possibly building a midsize truck that would wear the VW logo on the front of it. Right now, the teams are only in the early stage of talks, but it is a conversation that’s being had.
The Volkswagen Truck Already on the Market
Europe and other markets have the benefit of seeing the Volkswagen Amarok on the market. This is a full-size body-on-frame pickup truck that’s been around since 2010 to give customers the drive and power they desire. This truck uses a range of diesel engines which make it one of the most impressive trucks in the markets that it’s sold. Even though the Amarok is a success, it’s getting long in the tooth and will need major changes to be offered in the US.
Taking the Ranger to a New Level
While we’ve missed the Ford Range in our market for several years, this truck has been offered around the world for several years. It has been the chief competitor to the Amarok in Europe, which is one reason why VW would love to be able to build a Ranger-based midsize pickup and offer it in the US. The Ranger is finally arriving in our market again. Hopefully, the two companies will find a way to make a truck with the Volkswagen logo on it that we can admire and enjoy in the near future.
The Future Drive
When you think about what Volkswagen has been working on and the fact that Ford is finally ready to give us a new Ranger to enjoy on the road, it’s easy to think that we could eventually see a Volkswagen branded electric pickup truck with many of the Ranger qualities offered in the future. The new I.D. models are expected to be built in the VW plant in Tennessee, but that plant might be too small to be effective for the operation.
A Partnership to Watch
While there might not be much excitement in the fact that we’re going to see some commercial vehicles offered from Volkswagen and Ford working together, the idea that the two brands could collaborate and create a pickup truck that can be right for the drive we want to enjoy. We’ll keep an eye on what’s going on with this partnership and see if it produces a new midsize truck that we can admire and drive every day. Whether or not it will be an electric vehicle or one that has new technology from VW is yet to be seen, but the thought has us intrigued.
