Your Chrysler dealership can officially expect to see a fully electric EV crossover in the near future. The Chrysler CEO confirmed it should be out by 2025.
Chrysler’s chief designer had previously said that the new EV would take the brand in a whole new direction.
New Head Designer In At Stellantis
Ralph Gilles recently took over as the head designer for Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, and Maserati as of January 2021. Gilles has already overseen several major projects for Stellantis, including the Ram EV pickup and the Dodge Charger SRT EV. But Gilles reveals that he’s the most excited to get started on Chrysler’s first EV. The brand previously pledged to go all-electric by 2028, but thus far, has not revealed an EV.
Previously, the Airflow EV concept was unveiled, which showed us a sleek crossover that seemed to nicely represent the brand. However, Gilles says that this concept was only a start and the current design is evolving in a different direction.
The first EV by Chrysler probably won’t look exactly like the Airflow, but it will likely include many of the same features. For example, the concept showcased advanced tech, assisted driving, and much more. Some of this tech is still being developed as well.
No Surprises Here
Crossovers are all the rage, and it’s no surprise that most automakers are focusing on EV crossovers for the upcoming electric market. Chrysler is no different by confirming that its first EV will be a two-row crossover. You can probably expect to see the new model at your Chrysler dealership sometime in 2025.
The new crossover will be inspired by the design of the Airflow concept and will be built on the STLA Large platform, which is currently used by other EV models under the Stellantis brand. The Airflow concept was designed using the Chrysler RU platform, which is the one used for the Pacifica hybrid. However, the STLA platform should offer more capability.
Despite this announcement, Chrysler has backtracked somewhat on its original statement of going electric by 2028. The CEO said that the Pacifica hybrid will continue to be available through the end of the decade.
Some Consumers Have Other Ideas
Even though Chrysler is going the expected route of making its first EV a two-row crossover, some consumers think that the brand should do something different and capitalize on what it’s known for. The idea is that Chrysler is known mainly for making van models and could gain more fans by focusing on this type of vehicle.
It’s definitely true that for much of the last few decades, Chrysler’s most standout models have indeed been vans. But at the same time, you can’t fault the brand for going after what sells, and there’s no doubt that crossovers continue to be the most popular style of vehicle for most consumers.
In any case, you’ll have a few years to wait before getting a glimpse of the latest Chrysler EV at your Chrysler dealership.
