Once the vehicle is started in a Cadillac model, you don’t have to have the key fob present until you’re ready to put the vehicle in park.
In the world of push-button starting that takes place in nearly every vehicle that we drive on the road, you might wonder what could happen if you don’t have your key fob present for a drive. Most of you might think that you couldn’t start the car, or drive the car, or park the car, but only one of these is true.
How Can a Missing Key Fob Benefit You
Strangely, there aren’t many times when the lack of a key fob could be helpful unless you’ve ever forgotten something and just need to run inside to grab an item. You might want the vehicle to continue to provide heat or air conditioning to other occupants that aren’t needed to run in for the forgotten items, but if you have the key fob in your pocket, the question of whether or not the car will remain running can be answered. In GM models, including the Cadillac you love to drive, you’re going to have the benefits of Extended Parking that will keep the vehicle running for you.
What is Extended Parking
The Extended Parking feature, which most people don’t know they have in their vehicles, gives you the ability to park a vehicle that doesn’t have the key fob present for up to thirty minutes with the engine still running. Once in park, until the key fob is present, the vehicle won’t allow you to drive, and after the time has passed, it will shut down. This can be a useful feature when you have to run in for something or when picking up kids from activities.
Make Sure You Have the Key Fob
While you could make Extended Parking work for you, it can cause problems for you if you forget the key fob or accidentally leave it in a bag or jacket that you leave behind. If you start the vehicle, put it in gear, and before leaving the driveway, take a jacket off and hand it out the window with the key fob in the jacket, you won’t know the fob is missing for a while. You could drive as far as the gas tank will allow before you discover that you’re missing something important.
Useful for You and Your Cadillac
The thirty-minute window in which you can be out of the vehicle with the key fob in your pocket while the vehicle continues to run is useful for quick trips, but you need to make sure you avoid the extremely specific situation in which you would be miles away before you discover you’re missing something. Extended Parking is explained in the owner’s manual, but no one has time to read that at all. Just remember, you need the key fob to make the vehicle perform for you, but you don’t need it at all times in your Cadillac.
