If your local GM dealer is having a hard time keeping the GMC Sierra in stock, here’s why. The flagship GMC pickup accounted for over half the sales of GMC’s total sales tally for 2021. If you look more closely at the figures, then you’ll find that the Sierra LD or the Sierra 1500 was the most sold model, which was followed by the Yukon SUV and the Sierra HD model lineup.
A Closer Look at 2021 GMC Sales
The sales figures for the GMC pickup lineup include 70,578 Sierra HD units sold and 178,346 Sierra LD units sold. The total figure of 248,924 is around half of total GMC sales for 2021. GMC sold roughly 482,437 vehicles in 2021, which was about 6.4% less than what it sold in 2020. The culprits for the lower sales numbers were mainly the supply chain issues and continued reverberations from the pandemic. GMC’s sales were not the only ones to suffer in 2021. GM’s sales as a company across all of its brands were dented significantly. The dent was big enough to topple it from the top spot for vehicles sold per year.
Top-Selling Sierra Duo
The two Sierra trucks are definitely the models with the most clout in the GMC lineup. The Sierra LD had the most sales with 178,346 units sold. It suffered a 0.5% loss compared to its sales in 2020. In terms of the 2021 Q4 sales, the total sales for the Sierra trucks were 57,738, which was 26.3% less than the same quarter in 2020. Individually, the Sierra LD trucks hit a sales figure of 41,812 for the quarter, while the Sierra HD trucks managed 15,926.
After the Sierra trucks, the other top GMC vehicle moved by GMC dealers that year was the Yukon SUV. Sales for this popular SUV totaled 84,242 units for 2021. Unlike other GMC vehicles, the Yukon saw a growth in sales to the tune of 32.8% compared to the previous year. The Sierra overall lost 4.3% of its sales compared to the previous year.
GMC Sierra Trucks: What You Get
When it comes to the truck itself, the Sierra LD trucks have a starting price of $30,100 and can go as high as $59,600 at your GMC dealer when you get the highest Denali trim with the 4WD crew cab layout. The Sierra 1500 has a maximum tow rating of 12,100 pounds when properly equipped. The fuel economy is rated at 15-23 MPG in the city and 19-30 MPG on the highway. Your numbers will vary depending on the engine and layout that you choose. The Sierra has a nice choice of engines, including a 4.3-liter V6 as the standard engine. Four other optional engines are available, including a 3.0-liter turbodiesel.
Despite the ongoing supply chain issues, you can generally find the GMC Sierra trucks at your local GMC dealer. The Sierra has a lot of options to choose from, so you might need to put in a pre-order to get exactly what you want.
