The Evolution of the Ford Mustang: A Look Back at Iconic Models

The Ford Mustang is as American as apple pie and the Star Spangled Banner. This incredible muscle car has a rich history with decades of success and admiration.

The Mustang is easily one of the most iconic cars in the entire automotive market. People all over the country see this Ford muscle car and immediately understand what this car means to the world. Whether this car comes with a tough and strong V8 engine or it’s powered by one of the smaller engines, this Ford shows up and shows off. With that in mind, here are some of the most iconic versions of this car.

Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R

The SVT Cobra R model was part of the Mustang lineup from 1993 to 2004. This was one of the highest-performing models during this decade. The SVT Cobra is better in nearly every way compared to the regular models of this car. This model offers impressive handling, power, and an improved driving experience. This means this car has the juice to outperform other V8 models from the same time period.

Ford Mustang II King Cobra

The King Cobra was impressive but made at the wrong time. This Ford Mustang came around during a time when gas prices were making it difficult for drivers to afford to get behind the wheel of a gas-guzzling V8-powered muscle car. The King Cobra was a top pick for the second-generation Mustang, but it only produced 139 horsepower. Still, this is one of the most iconic versions of this muscle car that was ever made. The Mustang II was considered one of the worst models ever, but the King Cobra makes it better.

Ford Mustang California Special

This interesting version of the Musang gave us a cross between a Shelby and a traditional version of this muscle car. The GT/CS, as it might be better known, is a car that became a hit with collectors. The first time it was created was in 1968, when it was made exclusively for the state of California. As it expanded, the California Special sold in other areas and was mostly, and exterior upgrade package to make this car look sportier and more fun.

Ford Shelby Mustang GT500

What can you find that’s better than a Ford Mustang GT350? How about a GT500? This version of the Mustang was released in 1967 to offer excellent power from a massive 428 cubic inch V8 engine. The Shelby GT500 was a huge hit, and it returned in 2007 to give us a high-powered model that uses a 5.4-liter supercharged V8 engine that generates 500 horsepower. There’s also a higher-powered GT500KR that delivers 540 horsepower to the wheels. In 2011, the GT500 generated 550 horsepower. This is easily one of the most iconic versions of this muscle car.

Ford Mustang Mach 1

The Mach 1 isn’t the fastest version of this muscle car, but it certainly earns a place on this list of iconic models. The first time this name was used was in 1969 when it had a 428-ci V8 engine under the hood. The Mach 1 name was used again in 1971 and 1975. It reappeared in 2003 with a high-output V8 engine that generates 305 horsepower for the drive.

Original 1964 ¼ Ford Mustang 289

The original Ford Mustang was pretty incredible in its own right. Many Mustang lovers turned to this model as a vehicle that quickly became an iconic model. The model year designation was made because it came out shortly after the 1964 lineup began but well before the 1965 models were offered. The Mustang 289 is the first muscle car of its kind, and it has a strong V8 engine that delivers the desired driving performance. The small body and powerful engine make this car one of the best of all time.

Ford Mustang Boss

The Boss Mustang comes in several engine sizes, with the 302 being the most iconic. This model had the smallest engine of the Mustangs to wear the Boss name. This car delivered 290 horsepower and came out in 1969. The next time the Boss name was used, the car had a 351 cubic-inch engine, which made it more powerful and impressive. The next time we saw the Boss name, this car used a 429-ci engine that sent 375 horsepower to the wheels.
