The Ford Explorer that we first saw was built as the Police Interceptor version to offer the next generation of law enforcement vehicles.
Now, we’ve gotten a good look at the civilian version that will come to the 2020 model year and give us the next version of a favorite model. The Ford Explorer was seen on the road wearing next to nothing in the way of camouflage, and it’s ready for us to talk about and consider as the model that could be right for your drive.
Looks that are Right from Ford
Up front, the police and civilian models of the Ford Explore look nearly identical. This SUV offers a flat hood, headlights that merge with the grill, and the shape that we admire and understand. The main grill of the model you’ll want to drive is different from the one offered in the police version. The slats of the upper grill match those of the lower grill in the civilian model with a mesh that looks great when you take a look at how this front area was designed for the new Explorer.
Compared to the Previous Explorer
When you set the new 2020 version of the Ford Explorer next to the previous model, you’ll see a roof that’s a little lower, C-pillars that lean forward, and a front overhang that’s nearly disappeared. The front wheels are also pushed farther ahead of the A-pillars to make sure you can see a difference. There’s a subtle change which is a chrome strip that’s added along with the plastic cladding on the side to give you a contrast and a bit more of what you want to see when you’re looking for a bit of chrome in the vehicle you drive.
Expected Power for the Explorer
The new 2020 Ford Explorer will likely be powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine that’s been offered in the past to give us up to 400 horsepower. If this power level is achieved, we might see the Explorer in an ST trim. We expect to see a hybrid powertrain offered, and potentially the 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the base model used to give us the starting point for the drive in the SUV that we love. This SUV should be offered in RWD with AWD as an option you can choose.
When will we see the new Explorer?
Because the testing mule of the Ford Explorer already looks like it’s ready to be revealed, we expect to see this SUV soon. It’s possible we’ll see the SUV in the early part of 2019 and on sale by the end of next year. Right now, the Michigan State Police are testing the police versions of the Explorer and the civilian version of it will be offered for us to enjoy for the 2020 model year. Look forward to this new version of the SUV that you already know and love when it arrives.
