The New Supra Will be Different from What We Expect

We’ve been waiting for Toyota to bring us one of our favorite models and put it back in their lineup so that we can have a vehicle that offers us the right way to drive when we want something that’s special and impressive on the road and track. This car is the Supra, which has been expected for a few years already. As a car we know is being built in conjunction with BMW, the Supra is one we keep looking to be offered and haven’t yet been able to satisfy that desire because Toyota has continued to keep it off the market.

The new Supra is now being said to be a model that won’t even be offered as a Toyota at all. This new sports car is one that we want to wear the Toyota badge and show up with the name we know and trust, but there seems to be a possibility, at least in Japan, that the Supra will wear a GR badge on it instead of the interlocking ovals that make the T shape in the Toyota logo. What does this mean for the car we want to drive?

What Does “GR” Mean?

The GR badge that the new Supra may wear stands for Gazoo Racing which is the performance racing division of Toyota in Japan. This means the car won’t wear a Toyota badge at all when it shows up on the market in Japan, but that doesn’t explain what we’ll have when it arrives in the US. Toyota doesn’t have a Gazoo Racing division in the US but does have the TRD group which stands for Toyota Racing Development. Will the same rules apply when this sports car arrives in the US or will we see the Toyota badging?

Considering all other models that wear the TRD badging on them are offered with Toyota badging on them, we will likely see the Supra arrive with the Toyota name on it and the interlocking ovals in the form of a “T” on the front of the car. We’ll certainly admire this car regardless of what it wears in terms of badging and expect to continue to discuss what this car will be when it shows up on the market in the future. We’re waiting with bated breath for this sports car to show up on the market once again.

When will we have the new Toyota Supra to drive and admire, regardless of the badging? Unfortunately, it appears we won’t see this car until the second half of 2019 even though the new BMW Z4 will arrive on the market next year. At least they’ve given us the handsomely redesigned 2018 Toyota Camry to gawk at until it finally arrives. We have to wait just a bit longer, but Toyota has been spotted at Nurburgring with the Supra in disguise testing to see what this car could be and how it will perform when it finally makes it way to the market. This edgy and impressive car is one we’re anticipating being one of the most active and engaging cars to drive when it arrives.
