We’ve talked at length about the potential for the new Toyota Supra to be offered on the market in the near future and it appears this car is nearly here.
The car we will see will wear a name that has been lauded as a tuner’s delight for a few decades and will need to meet or exceed the expectations of the masses. The fact that Toyota partnered with BMW for the development of this car has led to even more excitement around the impressive new sports car that we’ve been waiting for since it became a hint of a rumor.
Taking on Le Mans in the Toyota Supra First
The production model of the new Toyota Supra isn’t expected to be offered for sale until sometime in 2019. We may get a look at it and understand the qualities it brings to the market at one of the auto shows later this year, but this car, in racing garb, was taken to France for the world’s most popular race. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is a race that carries all the respect and stories that you could imagine and showed itself to be a fitting place for the Supra to debut.
Toyota was able to win the overall race in the Supra and after the race more of the details of what this car will be as a production model were revealed. The expectation is that the Supra will be a hardcore sports car that’s meant to be taken to the track, even in its production form. The idea of practicality and comfort was never part of the considerations made when it came to building the Toyota Supra that was developed alongside the newest version of the BMW Z4, making the Supra an amazing model that we anticipate.
A Bit More About the Supra
If you thought the new Toyota Supra and BMW Z4 were essentially the same cars, you’d be wrong. The Toyota engineers that were on hand at Le Mans informed us that the two cars share a gearbox and engine but they have completely different suspension and software to make them extremely different. There also may be a performance-focused version of the Supra that will be offered later than the first one. With the new GRMN sub-brand from Toyota that’s offered in Europe, we may see a Supra GRMN in the future as the performance model.
The standard version of the Toyota Supra that we expect to see and enjoy will be powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine that comes from BMW. This engine is attached to an eight-speed automatic transmission to give us an exciting powertrain. We don’t have the power numbers for the Supra yet, but the BMW Z4 M40i will make around 355 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque, which is what the Supra may bring as well. More will be learned as we come closer to when this car finally shows up on the market to give us the Supra we’ve been clamoring for.
